Wangka Maya NAIDOC Open Day 2013

The Wangka Maya staff and Board members welcomed the community into our centre this month. At our third annual Open Day, we cooked kangaroo and damper, painted faces, and had a good yarn with each other. It’s wonderful to be a part of such a strong team and a friendly community!

NAIDOC Week Lecture on Language

Wangka Maya collaborated with Bloodwood Tree Association to host a public lecture on language on July 2. The lecture was called ‘Pilbara Languages: An Introduction.’ It was aimed at a general audience and was designed to give people a greater understanding and appreciation of the language diversity of the Pilbara. It was extremely well-attended, and the audience gave it a very warm reception. Several people even asked if Wangka Maya would be willing to deliver the lecture again sometime! It was especially rewarding to be able to partner with Bloodwood on this project.
